A new study has found that the protective shield fluoride forms on teeth is up to 100 times thinner than previously believed. This raises questions about how this renowned cavity-fighter really works.

It has long been believed that fluoride changes the main mineral in tooth enamel, hydroxyapatite, into a more-decay resistant material called fluorapatite. But the new research found that the fluorapatite layer formed in this way is only 6 nanometers thick — meaning it would take almost 10,000 such layers to span the width of a human hair. According to Science Daily:

“The scientists question whether a layer so thin, which is quickly worn away by ordinary chewing, really can shield teeth from decay”.

Another new study shows that exposure to fluoride may lower children’s intelligence.  In addition to toothpaste, fluoride is added to 70 percent of U.S. public drinking water supplies. PR Newswire reports:

“About 28 percent of the children in the low-fluoride area scored as bright, normal or higher intelligence compared to only 8 percent in the ‘high’ fluoride area … in the high-fluoride city, 15 percent had scores indicating mental retardation and only 6 percent in the low-fluoride city.”

Fluoride is a potent neurotoxin that’s been fraudulently promoted as a cure for cavities for the past five decades. Finally, we’re beginning to see the kind of research needed to hopefully reverse this great injustice…

The two recent scientific developments above deserve special notice as together they offer a compelling picture of the truth. Not only do we now have yet another study showing that fluoridated water has a significant impact on children’s IQ, but researchers have also discovered that the benefits of topical application of fluoride is highly questionable.

Folks, there are FAR better options for decreasing tooth decay than using a topical poison or ingesting a harmful industrial pollutant.

Fluoride Does Not Make Your Teeth More Resistant to Decay

According to Science Daily, Americans spend a staggering $50 billion a year on the treatment of cavities. Fluoride, long heralded as the answer to decaying teeth, can be found in a vast assortment of toothpastes, mouthwashes and professionally applied fluoride treatments. It’s even added to your drinking water for this purpose.

Now, a groundbreaking study published in the journal Langmuir has uncovered that the fluorapatite layer formed on your teeth from fluoride is a mere six nanometers thick. To understand just how thin this is, you’d need 10,000 of these layers to get the width of a strand of your hair! Scientists now question whether this ultra-thin layer can actually protect your enamel and provide any discernible benefit, considering the fact that it is quickly eliminated by simple chewing.

An Even Bigger Issue: Water Fluoridation

The conventional wisdom has been that topical application of fluoride can help strengthen your enamel and help prevent decay. If that’s untrue, then the case against water fluoridation—the ingestion of fluoride—becomes even stronger than it ever was before.

There’s just no doubt that ingesting fluoride has no beneficial effect on your teeth. In fact, there’s overwhelming evidence indicating that fluoride is a potent toxin that can cause a wide array of severe health problems once ingested.

When evaluating the issue of water fluoridation it is also important to understand that fluoride is a drug. You can’t get fluoride without a prescription. Yet it’s being added to your water supply on a mandatory basis at various levels that may or may not be safe for various individuals, especially children, the sick, and the elderly. Water fluoridation is a major assault on your freedom of choice – to be drugged or not.

Sodium fluoride, which is a far simpler toxin than the fluoride compounds used for most water fluoridation, has also been used for rat and cockroach poisons, so there is no question that it is highly toxic.

Amazingly, the United States is only one of eight countries in the entire developed world that fluoridates more than 50 percent of its water supply. (The other seven are: Australia, Colombia, Ireland, Israel, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore.) In Europe, Ireland is the only country that fluoridates more than 50 percent of its drinking water, and England fluoridates 10 percent. Most of mainland Europe is not fluoridated, and yet, according to World Health Organization data, their teeth are just as good, if not better than Americans’.

Studies Link Water Fluoridation to Reduced IQ in Children

The latest study linking water fluoridation to lowered IQ was announced in a December 21 news release. However, this study was recently withdrawn from publication according to Jane Schroeder (NIH/NIEHS). In an email response she explained the reason for the withdrawal as follows:

“Following Ahead of Print publication EHP learned that many of the data had been published in a previous paper (Xiang et al. 2003. Effect of fluoride in drinking water on children’s intelligence. Fluoride 36: 84-94), in violation of EHP¹s policy regarding the use of previously published material in original Research Articles. Consequently, the paper had to be withdrawn from publication.”

That said, the data published in 2003 still stands and is still valid. Dr. Connett has also stated that his comments still stand.

According to Paul Connett, director of the Fluoride Action Network:

“This is the 24th study that has found this association, but this study is stronger than the rest because the authors have controlled for key confounding variables and in addition to correlating lowered IQ with levels of fluoride in the water, the authors found a correlation between lowered IQ and fluoride levels in children’s blood.

This brings us closer to a cause and effect relationship between fluoride exposure and brain damage in children.

What is also striking is that the levels of the fluoride in the community where the lowered IQs were recorded were lower than the EPA’s so-called ‘safe’ drinking water standard for fluoride of 4 ppm and far too close for comfort to the levels used in artificial fluoridation programs (0.7 – 1.2 ppm).”

Trained as a chemist specializing in environmental chemistry, Dr. Connett is known throughout the world as a leader in the movement opposing water fluoridation because of his knowledge base. His organization, the Fluoride Action Network, contains a wealth of information on this topic.

Earlier this year I joined forces with Connett to publicize his game plan to end water fluoridation in Canada and the United States. I’ll review it again at the end of this article.

In December 2010, a second study reporting an association with exposure to fluoride and lowered IQ in children was pre-published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials.

According to the authors, “our study suggested that low levels of fluoride exposure in drinking water had negative effects on children’s intelligence and dental health and confirmed the dose–response relationships between urine fluoride and IQ scores as well as dental fluorosis.”

This study indicates a 5 point lowering in IQ as the fluoride level in drinking water went from about 0.3 ppm to 3.0 ppm.

Fluoride has Been Repeatedly Linked to Brain Damage

In addition to this study, there are 23 more from four different countries (Mexico, Iran, India and China), which indicate that even moderate exposure to fluoride lowers IQ in children.

According to Dr. Connett, there are also more than 100 animal studies linking fluoride to brain damage, spanning all the way back to 1941. Unfortunately, most of the IQ studies have been unavailable in English, which is why the 2006 fluoride report created by the National Research Council of the National Academies contained only five of the available studies.

Still, while reviewing just 20 percent of the evidence, the panel concluded that there was a consistent and plausible link between fluoride exposure and reduced IQ. The news release quotes Tara Blank, Ph.D., the Science and Health Officer for the Fluoride Action Network as saying:

“Millions of American children are being exposed unnecessarily to this neurotoxin on a daily basis. Who in their right mind would risk lowering their child’s intelligence in order to reduce a small amount of tooth decay, for which the evidence is very weak.”

Indeed.

According to Dr. Connett,  the newest studies show that over 40 percent of American children are overexposed to fluoride. How can we know? Because they have the telltale sign of dental fluorosis. In its mildest form, dental fluorosis looks like little white specks on your teeth. But as it gets more serious, it begins affecting more of the surface of your teeth, creating yellow, brown and orange mottling.

Promoters of fluoridation scoff at these signs, saying that they’re “just cosmetic.”

But, since we already know that water fluoridation does NOT effectively reduce dental caries, this is an unnecessary cosmetic defect, and, worse yet, it is a worrisome indication that your body has been overexposed to fluoride. If it’s having a detrimental, visual effect on the surface of your teeth, you can be virtually guaranteed that it’s also damaging something else inside your body, such as your bones.

Other Fluoride-Induced Health Problems

In fact, fluoride will accumulate in your body and can, over time, lead to far more serious health concerns. There are plenty of studies showing the dangers of fluoride to your health—besides dental fluorosis—such as:

Parents Beware: Never Use Fluoridated Tap Water when Making Infant Formula

Most of the people who are educated about fluoride will avoid drinking municipal tap water that is fluoridated, and a reverse osmosis system is about the only way to rid your water of fluoride. However, there are many who simply don’t have the resources or the know-how to protect themselves and their young children. In November of 2006, the American Dental Association (ADA) sent out an email to alert its members of their recommendation to parents to not use fluoridated tap water to make infant formula. A few days later, the CDC followed suit.

But neither of them openly informed the public!

So millions of parents are still using tap water to make up formula, oblivious of the fact that the agencies that promote fluoridation in this country have issued a specific warning against using fluoridated water for this purpose. Not only that, but by fluoridating the municipal water supply, you doom many low income families to fail to protect their young children from this dangerous drug, even if they have this information.

What’s the REAL Cause of Tooth Decay?

Tooth decay is caused by acids in your mouth, typically created from sugar being metabolized by bacteria (Streptococcus mutans), and as you may already know, the number one source of calories in the United States is high fructose corn syrup.

The acid produced then attacks your enamel. Eventually the bacteria can get into the dentine, at which point tooth decay sets in. You typically don’t find dental caries in more primitive societies that do not consume these vast amounts of sugar. So, the real answer lies in your diet. Avoid excessive sugar consumption, and your dental health will improve along with the rest of your body.

How You Can Help End Water Fluoridation in Canada and the United States

The Fluoride Action Network is an absolutely phenomenal resource for further education, and they’re doing much to pressure the US government for change.

Later this year we plan on developing a massive social networking initiative to form local groups in which you can work on removing fluoride in your local community. We will have access to online tools that will help you replicate success other Canadian and American municipalities have had in removing fluoride.

Until then if you are a professional you can sign FAN’s  statement calling for an end to fluoridation worldwide now been signed by more than 3,230 professionals. We encourage all medical and science professionals to sign this statement.

Our fluoride initiative will largely focus on Canada, because 60 percent of Canada is already non-fluoridated. Unfortunately your body is under constant daily assault by toxic substances, a great many of which are hard or impossible to completely avoid.

Besides the industries that pump or dump known toxins into your air, food and water, there are also synthetic chemicals in most products on your supermarket shelves.

“Better living through chemistry” really has become the accepted standard for our modern world.

But as we are learning the hard way through the explosion of degenerative diseases in the modern world, many chemicals, especially man-made ones, can do much more harm to your body than good!

In my opinion, one of the biggest hazards to your health comes from something you are likely taking for granted.

The water you drink, the water you bathe in, and the water you run through your appliances. It is vitally important for you to secure a good, clean source of water, and this is easily done by installing one or more types of water filtration systems in your house — I will talk more about that in a minute.

Your Body Is Mostly Water

On a percentage basis your body is over 99 percent water, or hydrogen and oxygen atoms.

Your body requires a constant daily supply of water to fuel all the various waste filtration systems nature has designed to keep your body healthy and free of toxins. Your blood, your kidneys, and your liver all require a source of good clean water to detoxify your body from the toxic exposures you come into contact with every day.

When you give your body water that is filled with toxins leached from plastic, or filled with by-products from chlorination, or with volatile organic compounds, or water that is contaminated by pesticides or hormones, you are asking your body to work twice as hard at detoxification, because it must first detoxify the water you are drinking, before that water can be used to fuel your organs of detoxification!

Clearly, the most efficient way help your body both avoid and eliminate toxins is to provide your body with the cleanest, purest water you can find. And that may be more of a challenge than you think.

The Problem with Modern Well Water

Unless you are getting your water from a well that is located 800 feet or more below the ground surface, chances are your well water has been contaminated by some if not many toxic substances that have been dumped into the ground soil over the past many decades.

Some common toxins that are dumped by the millions of pounds into soils every year are:

• Herbicides
• pesticides
• estrogen mimicking hormones
• drug residues
• heavy metals

In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find a natural well in America that hasn’t been affected by some type of chemical or heavy metal runoff from the surrounding ground soil.

This is to say nothing of the microorganisms living in well water. No matter how clean or pure your natural ground water looks, this has nothing to do with potential bacterial contamination or toxic pollution in the water. Many of the offenders in well water are just much too small to be seen with the naked eye.

If your home uses well water, you really need to test to see what unwanted contaminants you’re piping into your house. As you will see below, the problem isn’t just that you may be drinking contaminated water; you’re also inhaling it and absorbing it through your skin directly into your bloodstream.

The Problem with Government Mandated Urban Water Treatments

If you live in a city and rely on the local water processing plant to provide you with clean water, I have some disturbing news for you: You simply cannot trust municipal sources or government agencies to keep your water clean.

Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J. recently told ABC News that there are more than 140 chemicals in U.S. drinking water supplies that are not regulated by the EPA. This includes, gasoline, pesticides, rocket fuel, prescription drugs and more.

Further, more than 20 percent of U.S. water treatment systems have violated key provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act over the last six years, yet fewer than six percent of the violations were ever fined or punished! This is to say nothing of the violations that go unnoticed in this time of budgetary restraints and lack of regulation and oversight!

It gives you a look at the five most and least polluted water systems in America (in cities with more than 100,000 population), including pointing out the pollutants of largest concern.

Adding to the problem are numerous outdated and overwhelmed sewer systems, many of which were built more than a century ago. In 1972, the Clean Water Act was enacted to upgrade many U.S. sewer systems, yet despite updates made in the ’70s and ’80s, many sewer systems are still overwhelmed and are functioning at less than optimal levels.

Is there Sewage Spilling into Your Drinking Water?

As a result, sewage spilling into waterways is a common occurrence. In fact, the New York Times reported that in the last three years more than 9,400 of the 25,000 U.S. sewage systems have violated the law by dumping untreated or partially treated human waste, chemicals and other hazardous materials into rivers, lakes and other waterways.

Some natural lakes and bodies of water are now either approaching “dead”, unable to support life, or are dead. And these dead bodies of water continue to be the source of drinking water for millions of people!

Male frogs and bass are now found in nature with ovaries growing on their testes, and seven year-old girls are now reaching sexual maturity. Scientists have linked both of these phenomenon to the estrogen mimicking hormones now commonly found in our lakes, streams and drinking supplies.

Nearly every municipal water supply also has fluoride (a highly toxic poison) added during water treatment, which is detrimental to your health. Europeans have known for many years that fluoride is toxic and have long since removed it from their water supplies, but it still is used in the United States.

And then there are disinfection byproducts, or DBPs. If you have not heard of DBPs before, you need to pay close attention as it turns out that DBPs, not chlorine, are responsible for nearly all the toxic effects of chlorinated water. Chlorine by itself is relatively harmless, but its side effects, by producing DBPs, cause nearly all of the problems — including reproductive disorders and cancer.

So when you help yourself to a glass of water from your kitchen faucet, it may look much more pure than it actually is.

The Hazards of Chlorinated Water: Disinfection Byproducts (DBPs)

The main chemical used to disinfect the tap water you receive at your house is chlorine. While your local government is quick to assure you that there is relatively no danger from drinking chlorinated water, that simply is not the case, because the levels of chlorine disinfection byproducts (DBPs) that are produced by this process are both dangerous and alarming.

There is actually no safe level for many things found in drinking water, including heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, hormones and DBPs. The truth of the matter is it would cost the government trillions of dollars to provide truly clean water into the pipes of your house.

The resources to provide this just aren’t there. It never has been and it probably never will be, especially with the downturn in the US economy.

The government is much more concerned with providing water that doesn’t kill you through diarrhea and it does a good job at that, although some microorganisms (cysts and parasites) do survive the chlorination process (cryptosporidium, Giardia, for instance) and can lead to isolated outbreaks of disease and even death to those with compromised immune systems.

If you have not heard of DBPs before, you need to pay close attention as it turns out that DBPs, not chlorine, are responsible for nearly all the toxic effects of chlorinated water. Chlorine by itself is relatively harmless, but its side effects, by producing DBPs, are what cause nearly all of the problems.

As it turns out, DBPs are over 10,000 times more toxic than chlorine, and out of all the other toxins and contaminations present in your water, such as fluoride and miscellaneous pharmaceutical drugs, DBPs may be the absolute worst of the bunch.

The most common disinfectant byproducts formed when chlorine is used are:

• trihalomethanes (THMs)
• haloacetic acids (HAAs)

The EPA takes the dangers of THMs — which are measured in parts per billion — very seriously and regulates these compounds. The maximum annual average of THMs in your local water supply cannot exceed 80 ppb (parts-per-billion), and the maximum annual average of HAAs permitted by EPA regulations is 60 ppb.

However even though these are allowed, ideally it would be best to have zero. These levels have been regularly adjusted downwards over the years as science progresses and gain a deeper appreciation of their true toxicity. If you are like me and obtain your water from a private well, then DBPs are a non-issue as they are only produced when chlorine is added, and it’s highly unusual to add chlorine to most all private well water systems.

How Can DBPs Harm Your Health?

Trihalomethanes (THMs) are Cancer Group B carcinogens, meaning they’ve been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals.

DBPs have also been linked to reproductive problems in both animals and humans, and human studies suggest that lifetime consumption of chlorine-treated water can more than double the risk of bladder and rectal cancers in certain individuals.

One such study found that smoking men who drank chlorinated tap water for more than 40 years faced double the risk of bladder cancer compared with smoking men who drank non-chlorinated water. A second study found that rates for rectal cancers for both sexes escalated with duration of consumption of chlorinated water. Individuals on low-fiber diets who also drank chlorinated water for over 40 years more than doubled their risk for rectal cancer, compared with lifetime drinkers of non-chlorinated water.

As the vast majority of the U.S. population continues to receive and consume disinfected or chlorinated drinking water, we can assume that Americans are consuming disinfection byproducts every single day, and the number of related cancer cases could be substantial.

Drinking Chlorinated Water is not the Only Health Concern

But the sad truth is, the chlorine, DBPs, and toxic chemicals found in your urban water supply also pose a health threat to your lungs, and it can damageyour appliances.

Why?

Because when you heat the water, in your shower, your bath, your dishwasher or your sink, you are releasing chlorine, DPBs, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), pesticides, herbicides – all of it – into the air you breathe! And onto your skin, your body’s greatest tool for absorbing chemicals. It’s true. By taking a seven-minute shower you are exposed to more chlorine, DPBs, and VOCs alone than by drinking a gallon of tap water.

And this is significant for two reasons:

• The chlorine that enters your lungs is in the form of chloroform, a carcinogen, and chlorite, a byproduct of chlorine dioxide. These forms of chlorine hit your bloodstream instantly before they have a chance to be removed by your organs of detoxification.
• The DBPs that enter your body through your skin also go directly into your bloodstream. And the warm or hot water maximizes absorption by your skin. So unless you are regularly taking one minute cold showers, your body is like a sponge for these airborne toxins every second you spend in a shower.

In fact it’s estimated that only five percent of all volatile organic compounds make it down the drain of your shower. The other 95 percent are sent into the air you breathe, or directly into your bloodstream.

By the way — bathing in municipal tap water is not a solution to avoiding the damage done in the shower, because the hot water on your skin facilitates absorption, and your skin is drinking in all those harmful DPBs every second that you lay luxuriating in that hot bath.

Now, this is painful news to a lot of people. Because you don’t really want to look at your shower as your home’s greatest source of toxic indoor pollution, do you? For some people, that long morning shower or that luxurious nighttime bath is one of the highlights of your day!

Additionally, the chlorine and DPBs are not great for your skin and hair, either. You know how you feel after you swim for even a little while in a chlorinated pool? The dry skin, the red eyes, the damaged hair – all of this chemical damage is going on in your home’s shower and bath as well!

And the harsh chlorine and disinfection byproducts that assaults your skin in the bath or shower is also doing unnecessary damage to your appliances!

Your dishwasher, hot water heater, sinks, tubs, faucets, toilets and washing machine all have metal parts that chlorine, a harsh oxidizer, will actually slowly eat away with every drop of water. So another reason to eliminate the chlorine and disinfection byproducts is to minimize the damage you are doing to your appliances, which will help them last longer and let you avoid costly repairs that you could have prevented by filtering the water coming into your home.

The Danger of Radon in Your Home’s Water

Besides inhaling chlorine and disinfection byproducts sent airborne by your hot shower, you also may be inhaling and absorbing radon, an odorless, radioactive gas. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, radon is the second most frequent cause of lung cancer, after cigarette smoking.

Radon is currently found in one third of all water supplies in America. That’s right, you have a one in three chance of having this byproduct of decaying uranium going onto your skin and into your lungs every day — if you are one of the unfortunate people with this poison in your water supply.

I would encourage you to spend the money necessary to test for this poison if you get your water from an underground well. Most municipal water supplies do not contain radon.

How You Can Avoid All of These Assaults on Your Health

If you would like to have your water tested, the most comprehensive test kit I recommend is from National Testing Laboratories.  We have these test kits available at cost, a significant discount from the standard online price.  If you’re interested, you can purchase a test kit for Well Water or for City Water.

If you could only afford one filter there is no question in most experts minds that the shower filter is the most important product to buy for water filtration, even more important than filtering your tap water. This is because the damage you incur through your skin and lungs far surpasses the damage done by drinking water (which at least gives your body a fighting chance to eliminate the toxins through your organs of elimination).

An even better solution to the problem of harsh chemicals and toxins in your home’s water supply is to install a whole house water filtration system. This not only protects your body, but also your appliances as well.

There’s just one water line coming into your house. Putting a filter on this is the easiest and simplest strategy you can implement to take control of your health by ensuring the water and the air in your house is as clean as possible.

Just remember, if you are getting your water from a municipal source your indoor air quality, especially in the winter when your windows are closed, is likely atrocious. This is related to the chlorine and other toxins evaporating from all your toilet bowls, showers, baths, dishwashers and washing machines.

My advice for whole house filtration systems is as follows: Find a system that uses at least sixty pounds of filter media and can produce eight or more gallons a minute. When you are running two different showers, the dishwasher and the kitchen sink at the same time, you’ll find our why these minimum levels are so important.

Now, this recommendation covers a home or apartment up to 3200 sq./ft, or in other words, a residence with about three and a half bathrooms. For more than that you will probably require two whole house water filtration systems.

You also need to look for a whole house water filter that has three separate stages of contamination removal:

• Stage one removes sediment.
• Stage two removes chlorine and heavy metals.
• Stage three should be a heavy-duty carbon filter for removing hormones, drug residues, chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides.

You want to look for granular carbon in the carbon filter, not a solid block of carbon. The granular carbon allows for better water flow, which translates to more water pressure and better filtering properties as well.

You also want to look for NSF certification, which ensures your water filter is meeting national standards. NSF certification is not given before a product can prove it removes everything it claims to remove. It’s also good to makes sure all particles under .8 microns are being filtered out of the water. A lower number is actually better, but .8 microns is the standard I recommend because that covers most bacteria, viruses and VOCs.

A Question about Tap and Shower Filters

One natural question that arises from my recommendation is if you invest in a whole house filtration system, do you also need a drinking water filter and a shower filter?

The answer is: It depends.

Many people’s home and apartments have older plumbing, which can lead to heavy metals getting into your water supply even after your whole house filter has already filtered the water. Even newer plumbing regulations allow for some lead as part of the pipe construction, so if you have brand new pipes you are still exposed to lead getting into your home’s water, just not as much as was previously allowed. And there is no safe level of lead exposure.

If you want to be absolutely certain you are getting the purest water you can, you want to filter the water both at the point of entry and at the point of use. This means filtering all the water that comes into the house, and then filtering again at the kitchen sink.

Since the whole house filter will remove 99.99 percent of the chlorine and DBPs before they reach your shower, and 100 percent of VOCs, you probably can skip the shower filter if you get a whole house filter, unless you are concerned about the metals in your house pipes getting onto your skin and hair. I personally prefer to filter at both point of entry and point of use, but this might be cost prohibitive for some people.

Unlike the shower filter, the whole house filter typically uses 60 pounds of carbon filter material, and moves cold water through the filter much at a much slower rate than the shower filter. So the whole house filter is going to remove 99.99 percent of the things you don’t want, while the shower filter is going to remove only about 70 percent of the chlorine, DPBs and VOC’s, because that filter only has about two pounds of carbon filter material, and it’s treating hot instead of cold water.

As far as the kitchen tap, if you are using reverse osmosis as your source of filtering, it is also going to processes cold water more slowly, so you will be able to get the 99.99 percent removal rate from the kitchen tap filter. But remember the hot water in the shower is still allowing about 30 percent of the DPBs into the air you breathe and onto your skin, which does far more damage than drinking unfiltered tap water.

This is why I recommend a high quality whole house filtration system.

The only instance where I recommend the tap and shower filter but not the whole house filter is for people living in an apartment building with a municipal water supply. Chances are you aren’t running that much water through your own appliances or faucets, and you may not have access to install a whole house filter in the first place. Treating your point of use water in this instance is probably the most cost effective.

Some Final Thoughts about Your Personal Water Supply

Your shower and tap are not the only source of potential environmental toxins in your home; water is also evaporating from your toilet every minute and sending chloroform and VOCs into the air you breathe.

And the water you put in your pet’s bowl is filled with the same harsh toxins you are exposing yourself to, and your pets are a whole lot smaller. One cup of water in your body is proportionally much smaller than one cup of water in your pet’s body. This goes for your children as well. Their smaller size means each gallon of water they are exposed to represents a much larger percentage of their body weight.

Your houseplants also do not like chlorine and byproducts of chlorination and VOCs. If you have trouble keeping your plants thriving, it may be because ordinary tap water is damaging their health.

Lastly, the single highest source of calories in America is high fructose corn syrup, primarily from soda. The average American is now drinking one gallon of soda a week! If you are not familiar with all of the health problems linked to high fructose corn syrup, you owe it to yourself to get some education on this subject.

And diet sodas are no better! Artificial sweeteners are just another poison you don’t want inside your body!

The most important health recommendation I can make for most people is to replace soda or diet soda with the purest, cleanest water you can find. And finding pure water is a lot harder than many people imagine! If you are spending your money on bottled water, you may be throwing that money away. Bottled water is actually less regulated than common tap water; you can never be certain what will be in it.

So one of the easiest ways to take control of your health is to control the water coming into your house. Make sure the water you are drinking, bathing in and breathing in your indoor air is clean! You can do this with a whole house water filter, a shower filter and a tap water filter, or a combination of these that makes the most sense for your residence and your budget.

The fact is, you need high quality clean water if you are ever going to become healthy, or stay healthy. And the more alcohol or caffeine or soda you take into your body, the more water you are going to need. So cutting down on any of these beverages and replacing them with equal amounts of water is one of the best investments in your health that you can make.

The thyroid gland controls the rate at which the body produces energy, and is instrumental in the development of the bones, brain, and nervous system. Hypothyroidism (an under-performing thyroid) is expressed by a depressed body temperature and voltage, and is linked to many diseases.

Dr. Jerry Tennant describes how fluoride “bullies out” the iodine (an essential component) in the thyroid hormone, which regulates the body’s voltage. If your body does not have proper voltage, it will not “heal” like it should because “healing” is simply cells reproducing to create new cells, which then replace the older damaged cells, and -50 mV’s of voltage is required for cells to do this. This means that sufferers of lowered body voltage induced by fluoride consumption are more vulnerable to all types of diseases and injuries.

Contrary to the unsubstantiated, regurgitated message that ‘fluoride in water protects our teeth’, the evidence shows that ingesting fluoride actually causes damage to teeth, a tragically all too common condition known as “dental fluorosis”. People, we really need to get fluoride out of our water; this is a very serious issue.

A new study pre-published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives confirms that fluoridated water causes brain damage in children. The most recent among 23 others pertaining to fluoride and lowered IQ levels, the new study so strongly proves that fluoride is a dangerous, brain-destroying toxin that experts say it could be the one that finally ends water fluoridation.

“This is the 24th study that has found this association,“ explained Paul Connett, Ph.D., director of the Fluoride Action Network (FAN). “[B]ut this study is stronger than the rest because the authors have controlled for key confounding variables and in addition to correlating lowered IQ with levels of fluoride in the water, the authors found a correlation between lowered IQ and fluoride levels in children’s blood.”

For the study, researchers evaluated 512 children ages 8-13 in two Chinese villages, one village with higher than average fluoride levels and the other with lower than average fluoride levels. After accounting for external variables like lead exposure, iodine deficiency and other conditions that might affect brain health, the team still found that the number of higher intelligence children in the low fluoride community was 350 percent higher than the number in the high fluoride community.

“In this study we found a significant dose-response relation between fluoride level in serum and children’s IQ,” wrote the study authors.

Though there have been numerous studies over the years the identify fluoride as a neurotoxin, most mainstream medical professionals in the U.S. have ignored them and continue to support water fluoridation. But the evidence continues to mount, and sooner or later the medical community will have to come to grips with the truth about fluoride.

“This should be the study that finally ends water fluoridation,” explained Tara Blank, Ph.D., Science and Health Officer at FAN. “Millions of American children are being exposed unnecessarily to this neurotoxin on a daily basis. Who in their right minds would risk lowering their child’s intelligence in order to reduce a small amount of tooth decay, for which the evidence is very weak.”

The residents of Waterloo, Ontario in Canada have voted to stop adding fluoride to their water supply. The decision has been welcomed by anti-fluoride campaigners.

The incoming head of the Ontario Dental Association, Dr. Harry Hoediono, has condemned the decision, claiming that people are unaware of the dental health benefits of fluoride. Campaigners against fluoride believe that adding the chemical to the water supply can cause health problems including cancer, thyroid disease and arthritis.

“Most councilors… voted in favor of stopping [fluoridation] to support public opinion… health officials had failed to run an effective campaign”.

Waterloo stopped adding fluoride to their tap water at noon November 29, 2010 at four water treatment sites, after 33 years of fluoridation.

Wisdom finally won over ignorance and greed, and an important step has been taken toward safeguarding the health of their children. Two years of advocacy and hard work by anti-fluoridation community members led to a winning campaign.

The battle over fluoride, which was first introduced into the water supply in Canada in the 1940s, is part of a growing movement across North America. In the early 2000s several communities in British Columbia voted to get rid of fluoride, as did Whitehorse in 1998.

But setbacks do happen. In 2007, a group of 200 dentists unsuccessfully lobbied Congress to have this toxic chemical banned from the U.S. water supply.

The battle rages on and appears to be gaining traction as more health-conscious Americans and Canadians become educated about the dangers of fluoride to their health.

Many dentists are simply seriously misinformed about fluoride, warning that cavities and public health costs will rise and that low-income children are at special risk. The American Dental Association has had tunnel vision on the fluoride issue for decades, paying no attention to ample evidence of the damaging systemic health effects of fluoride.

How You Can Help Get Fluoride Out of U.S. Water Supplies

I’ve joined forces with the Fluoride Action Network (FAN) to help end water fluoridation poisoning in Canada and the United States.

In the United States, we’re likely not going to be able to pass a federal law against fluoridation. There is not going to be a Presidential mandate or even a statewide elimination. This change will occur one community at a time.

The Growing Grassroots Movement Against Water Fluoridation

Fortunately, we also have people like Dr.Paul Connett leading this revolution. Professor Paul Connett is an environmental chemist and a key leader in the movement to get fluoride out of the water. He co-authored (with James Beck and H. Spedding Micklem) a new book, The Case Against Fluoride.

Paul and I agree that water fluoridation should be ended as soon as possible. However, we also believe there is little chance for meaningful action from the Federal government to end a practice the Department of Health and Human Services has endorsed and enthusiastically promoted since 1950.

We need your continuing help to put pressure on legislators to end this practice, one community at a time. Grassroots activism CAN work, as you can see from the decision in Waterloo—it was people like you who made the scales tip in the right direction.

The Fluoride Action Network (FAN), headed by Connett, has been an extraordinary resource for engaging people in individual towns and states into a grassroots movement against fluoridation. As a result, FAN now has point persons in several states, towns and communities.

Three locations were recently selected for special attention: San Diego, California; Austin, Texas; and the province of Ontario, Canada. And in fact, it was these focused efforts in Ontario that led to the successful Waterloo campaign.

Why San Diego and Austin Were Targeted

San Diego was targeted because it has twice voted to keep fluoridation out, but is now being forced to fluoridate under a state law passed in 1995.

The following brave pioneers have led the local efforts in that city:

• Dr. David Kennedy, local dentist and former president of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT)

• Dr.Paul Connett has given several presentations in San Diego, as well as holding several book-signing events there

Austin, Texas was chosen because it already had a very active anti-fluoridation campaign. The local coordinator of these efforts is Rae Nadler Oelnick, assisted by Linda Greene and Dr. Neil Carman, among others.

Paul Connett visited Austin in November 2010, with a side visit to San Antonio. He gave talks at two local universities, as well as a short presentation to the Austin City Council.

What Happened in Ontario Should Not Stay in Ontario

Ontario was selected because several cities there have already stopped fluoridation over the last few years.

Meanwhile, very few communities are still fluoridating their water in Quebec and British Columbia. It is believed that if one or two more cities in Ontario were to stop this practice, it could produce a domino effect that would bring an end to fluoridation in the key cities, Ottawa and Toronto.

With this in mind, Paul Connett gave presentations in Toronto, Oakville, and Waterloo, which overlapped the launching of his book and a review that appeared in the Toronto Globe and Mail on October 17, 2010.

What followed was an exciting victory when citizens narrowly voted out fluoridation in a referendum held in the cities of Waterloo and Kitchener, which is being hailed by fluoridation opponents as fluoridation’s “Waterloo.”

The Ontario Dental Association Whines Over Sour Grapes, but has Only Itself to Blame

Not surprisingly, the Ontario Dental Association (ODA), which actively campaigned to keep fluoridation in Waterloo, was bitterly disappointed by this defeat, complaining in recent newspaper articles that the vote represented the efforts of a dedicated but poorly informed minority.

However, the ODA has only itself to blame.

On October 7, 2010, the organization had the opportunity to debate Professor Connett along with geologist Heather Gingerich in Waterloo—but refused to do so. Arrogant, overconfident, and condescending, the ODA shot itself in the foot and lost the battle.

Who is REALLY Poorly Informed?

Just who has the real FACTS in this debate? Is it the ODA, or is it the “dedicated but poorly informed minority”?

As it turns out, challenging the science about the “benefits” of water fluoridation has become much easier, thanks to the publishing of The Case Against Fluoride. This enlightening book by Connett, Beck and Micklem has received several glowing reviews, praising its readability and the comprehensive way it covers the science to date.

For the ODA and other proponents of fluoridation to salvage any credibility for this misguided practice, the onus will be on them to produce a response to this book with the same level of scientific documentation as that delivered by Connett, Beck and Micklem.

How long will you have to wait for the other side of the story?

If the grassroots movement is so “misinformed,” it should pose no challenge at all for health policy makers to publish “The Case FOR Fluoridation,” based on whatever evidence they feel exists to support their position.

But don’t hold your breath on that one.

If such a book has not appeared within a year, most reasonable people are entitled to conclude that promoters do not have a scientific case to present.

Meanwhile, more and more scientists, who are independent of the influence of fluoridation’s endorsing agencies, are no longer supporting this practice, as you can see in the above video. Sadly, too many promoters have endorsed this practice for so long that they don’t know how to admit they are wrong.

Recapping the Main Arguments Against Fluoridation

The issue of fluoride in drinking water has a 60-year history that is far too involved to recount in its entirely here. But the main points are summarized below:

1. Administering a drug to the masses in a “one-size-fits-all” approach is a major assault to your freedom of choice.Once you put it in the water, there is no way to control the dose, or who gets it and how much they get. There is no oversight. Everyone is essentially forced to take the same medication, with an uncontrolled and unmonitored dose.

   No other drug is administered in this “one size fits all” way. Fluoride in water is not even regulated by the FDA—even though it does regulate fluoride in toothpaste and other oral care products.

   It is also important to understand that fluoride is being used as a drug and no other drug has ever been administered as a public health measure. It really is a major intrusion on an individual’s freedom of choice as fluoride is really difficult to filter out of the water once it is added.

   Forcing you to ingest fluoride in your drinking water is a careless and dangerous public health practice, and it’s simply bad medicine. There is NO OTHER DRUG that is forced upon the public in this way. It’s a major assault on your freedom of choice.

2. Fluoridation is unnecessary and avoidable. Fluoride is a nonessential nutrient, meaning not required by your body. No disease develops in humans when they are “deprived” of fluoride. Even the promoters of fluoridation have finally conceded the benefits of fluoride are only topical—it works from the outside of your tooth, not from inside your body.

   So why swallow it?

   Forcing people to ingest a topical drug is ineffective and unethical.

   Most European countries don’t fluoridate their water—including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Portugal, etc., and their teeth are as good as ours or better.

3. Fluoridation is ineffective. It does NOT decrease rates of tooth decay.There is practically no difference in tooth decay rates between fluoridated and non-fluoridated countries, and no difference between states that fluoridate a high versus low percentage of their water.

   Populations with diets low in processed sugar have virtually NO tooth decay, such as Korea—even among communities practicing minimal dental hygiene!

   A WHO study involving 12-year olds found tooth decay rates have decreased as fast in non-fluoridated areas as in fluoridated areas.

   The reason for this is that tooth decay is not caused by lack of fluoride, but instead by acids in the mouth produced by bacteria that are metabolizing sugar. The acid attacks the enamel, allowing the bacteria into the enamel, resulting in tooth decay.

   As Paul Connett said, reducing the rates of dental caries requires education, not fluoridation.

4. Fluoridation is probably causing harm.Dental Fluorosis

   Thirty-two percent of American children now have signs of dental fluorosis (mottling of the teeth), indicative of enamel damage. Dental fluorosis signifies overexposure to fluoride. Fluoridation promoters claim this is just a “cosmetic effect.”

   But this is far more than a cosmetic effect—it’s an indication your body has been overexposed to fluoride.

   If fluoride has damaged developing tooth cells, then there is every reason to believe it has had damaging effects on other cells in your body. Your teeth are the “window” to your bones—you can SEE your teeth, but you can’t see your bones, so bone damage can go unnoticed.

   Skeletal Fluorosis

   The first signs of fluoride poisoning are arthritis-like symptoms such as joint pain, as evidenced by studies in regions of India and China with naturally high fluoride levels. Despite this, no study has ever been conducted in the U.S. to investigate whether there’s an association between people living in fluoridated areas and higher arthritis rates.

   It is a known fact that 50 percent of the fluoride you ingest accumulates in your bones over your lifespan.

   Fluoride in bones increases brittleness and bone fractures. Bones appear denser on x-ray, but this density does not mean they are stronger—they are actually weaker because they are more brittle.

   Brain Development

   Fluoride is known to interfere with basic functions of nerve cells in your brain. There are now 30 animal studies demonstrating the damage fluoride inflicts on your brain, including your pineal gland.

   Which is more important—protecting your children’s teeth or protecting their brains?

   Thyroid

   Fluoride also lowers thyroid function. Fluoride was used in European medicine during the 1930s through 1950s to treat patients with overactive thyroid glands. This is a very real and significant concern today as millions of people suffer with low thyroid function.

   The levels of fluoride people are now getting from fluoridated water (and other sources) now equal the levels used in Europe to suppress overactive thyroid glands. [From page 234 of “Fluoride in Drinking Water” (2006), National Research Council]

   Infants/Children

   No one is more susceptible to fluoride’s effects that infants and children. Their blood-brain barrier is immature, allowing more fluoride to flow into and accumulate in their brains.

   Twenty-three studies from four different countries, one being China, have indicated that moderate exposure to fluoride islowering children’s IQ.

   Many of these studies have been peer reviewed by the National Academy of Sciences.

   In November of 2006, the American Dental Association (ADA) sent out an email to alert its members of their recommendation to parents to refrain from using fluoridated tap water for making infant formula. A few days later, the CDC followed suit. But neither of them openly informed the public!

   So there are millions of parents out there using tap water to make up formula, oblivious to the fact that the agencies promoting fluoridation in this country have issued a specific warning against using fluoridated water for this purpose.

   Major disconnect here—it’s absolutely bizarre!

   Not only that, but by fluoridating the municipal water supply, many low income families are doomed to fail at protecting their young children from this dangerous drug, even if they have this information, because they can’t afford water filtration systems or bottled water.

   There is a great deal of evidence that fluoridation can damage other body systems.

   For example, one study linked fluoride to anemia in pregnant women. If you have kidney disease, you are especially prone to a buildup of fluoride in your body because your kidneys excrete about 50 percent of your daily fluoride intake. Elevated fluoride consumption in childhood has also been shown to cause kidney damage. And fluoridation has been linked to some forms of cancer.

5. The type of fluoride being added to your water supply is NOT pharmaceutical grade fluoride, but rather an industrial waste product.It is important to make a distinction between the fluoride your dentist applies topically to your teeth, and the type of fluoride added to your drinking water. They are radically different.

   The type of fluoride your dentist uses is pharmaceutical grade sodium fluoride. If pharmaceutical grade fluoride were added to municipal water, it would be cost prohibitive.

   So, they came up with a cheap and convenient substitute—a widely available toxic waste product they cleverly marketed as a health product.

   The type of fluoride added to your water is actually a toxic byproduct of the phosphate fertilizer industry called hexafluorosilicic acid, or its sodium salt (silicofluoride). In other words, this form of fluoride comes from toxic gases captured by industrial wet scrubbing systems.

   This is NOT a pharmaceutical fluoride but instead a noxious combination of industrial byproducts, including arsenic and heavy metals… fluoride ala smokestack.

   Silicofluoride cannot be dumped into the sea by international law. It can’t be dumped locally because it’s too concentrated. But if someone buys it, it’s no longer a hazardous waste—it’s magically a health product.

The public water utilities buy this stuff and put it in your drinking water. It’s completely absurd.

A statement asking Congress to end water fluoridation in the United States has been released by the Fluoride Action Network (FAN). Over 600 professionals, including a Nobel Prize winner, officers in the Union that represents Environmental Protection Agency professionals, and members of the National Research Council panel on fluoride’s toxicology, have signed the statement.

The report urges Congressional members to “recognize that fluoridation is outdated, has serious risks that far outweigh any minor benefits, violates sound medical ethics, and denies freedom of choice.”

It cites eight recent events that call for an urgent end to water fluoridation. Among them:

• A 500-page review of fluoride’s toxicology by the National Research Council of the National Academies, published in 2006.
• Evidence from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that found 32 percent of U.S. children have dental fluorosis, which is caused by fluoride.
• The American Dental Association’s 2006 policy change, which recommends not giving fluoridated water to infants for the first 12 months of life.
• A Harvard University study that found a five- to seven-fold increased risk of osteosarcoma (bone cancer) among young men who were exposed to fluoride between the ages of 6 and 8.
• The CDC’s recognition that fluoride is beneficial in reducing tooth decay when it’s applied topically, not taken systemically.

The statement calls for members of Congress to sponsor a new Congressional Hearing on Fluoridation that requires those who continue to support water fluoridation to provide scientific basis, under oath, for their continued recommendations.

According to one of the statement’s signers, Dr. Arvid Carlsson, winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Medicine, “Fluoridation is against all principles of modern pharmacology. It’s really obsolete.”

If you still believe the myth that fluoride is good for your children’s (and your) teeth, think again. There are a vast number of scientific research studies confirming the opposite – that fluoride is a toxin that is extremely detrimental to your body, your brain, and even to your teeth.

One of the most active research areas today is fluoride’s ability to damage your brain. Recent human studies from China have confirmed the results of previous animal studies; that elevated fluoride exposure leads to reduced I.Q. in children.

Cognitive ability is further reduced if your child is deficient in iodine.

Prior to this, more than 30 animal studies produced since 1992 have reported impairment in learning and memory processes among animals treated with fluoride.

Even at levels as low as 1ppm (part per million), studies have demonstrated direct toxic effects on brain tissue, including:

• reduction in lipid content
• impaired anti-oxidant defense systems
• damage to your hippocampus
• damage to your purkinje cells
• increased uptake of aluminum
• formation of beta-amyloid plaques (the classic brain abnormality in Alzheimer’s disease)

There are so many scientific studies showing the direct, toxic effects of fluoride on your body, it’s truly remarkable that it’s NOT considered a scientific consensus by now. It truly amazes me that the medical (and dental) communities are so stubbornly resistant to connect the dots when it comes to the skyrocketing increase of cognitive decline in adults (Alzheimer’s and various dementia’s), and behavioral issues in children (ADD, ADHD, depression and learning disabilities of all kinds).

Fluoridating drinking water for dental health is a swindle of massive proportions.

As award-winning journalist, Christopher Bryson details in his book, The Fluoride Deception, fluoridating water began in the mid 1940’s as a solution to fluoride pollution, generated by the Atomic Bomb Program, and the aluminum industry.

Starting it off with a simple truth, that a natural form of fluoride is part of the composition of your teeth (organic calcium phosphate), they were able to pull the wool over everyone’s eyes, and convince everyone that drinking toxic chemical fluoride compounds – the waste materials from these fluoride-polluting industries – would be good for children’s teeth. It was sheer genius!

Start with a grain of truth, and end up with a lie the size of the Sahara.

Instead of risking increasing lawsuits from farmers whose crops and cattle were dying downwind, or having to spend enormous amounts of money to dispose of these chemicals safely, they were now able to SELL their waste material as a “health” product! Amazing!

And the cover-up continues to this day. Did you even know that when scientists study fluoride’s toxicity to humans, they study pharmaceutical grade fluoride (same stuff used in antidepressant drugs), but NOT the fluoride compounds actually USED for water fluoridation – the even more toxic waste materials now generated from Florida’s fertilizer industry?

So, in essence, their already detrimental results may in fact be FAR GREATER than currently perceived. Which is already bad enough, considering that basic sodium fluoride, (which is a far simpler toxin than the fluoride compounds used for most water fluoridation) is also used for:

• Rat and cockroach poisons

• Military nerve gas (sarin)

As I reported in an earlier article, in August 2007 the CDC has been charged with a formal complaint detailing unethical activities, and at the same time the Fluoride Action Network (FAN) released a Statement asking Congress to end water fluoridation in the United States, signed by more than 600 professionals, including a Nobel Prize winner, officers in the Union that represents Environmental Protection Agency professionals, and members of the National Research Council panel on fluoride’s toxicology.

How You Can Keep Your Teeth Healthy Without Fluoride

Fluoride was never your answer in the first place, so don’t fret, thinking that by eliminating this toxin you’ll destroy your child’s teeth (or your own).

Instead, look to your diet for naturally healthy teeth. In fact, most people whose diet includes very little sugar and few processed foods have very low rates of tooth decay. Limiting, or eliminating sugar, and avoiding processed foods — along with regular cleanings with your natural dentist — will ensure that your teeth stay healthy naturally.

You can also protect yourself by using only non-fluoride toothpaste, and not receiving fluoride treatments from your dentist. Certain cements, fillings and bonding materials also contain fluoride, so talk to your dentist about non-fluoride options in those cases.

You definitely should NOT give your child additional fluoride supplements, which some dentists will prescribe if you live in a non-fluoridated area.

Unfortunately, removing fluoride from your drinking water is a far more difficult feat. Whereas some other chemicals added to your drinking water will evaporate, fluoride is not one of them. Neither cooking, food processing, regular filtration, nor digestion will remove fluoride.

The only known way to remove fluoride from water is by using a reverse osmosis filter. A simple carbon filter will not remove fluoride. You should also remember to filter not only the water that you drink, but also the water you use to wash vegetables, make ice cubes, and cook with.

In addition to your kitchen, you might want to consider adding filters in your shower and your tub as well, since you will also absorb contaminations through your skin when you shower or bathe.
